Recently, was Reconciliation Week, a special time each year when we come together to honour and recognise the continuation of strengthening respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.
We have much to be proud of as Baysiders when it comes to reconciliation. Winnam Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation were officially transferred the title of the old Wynnum Hospital site from the Palaszczuk Government and will begin work on constructing a culturally-appropriate aged care facility, open to all. This is an exciting opportunity to improve the quality of healthcare outcomes for Baysiders, including our First Nations locals. It is a project that I have tirelessly advocated for, for many years, and I am delighted to have collaborated so closely with Winnam on realising this vision. The Path to Treaty Bill 2023 also recently passed State Parliament, which provides the legislative framework to begin a process of truth-telling, healing and treaty between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Palaszczuk Government. It will support individuals, communities, and Queensland to heal, and set out a way forward for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Palaszczuk Government to work together towards future treaties. These are monumental outcomes that were only realised through a deep commitment to respectful, pragmatic and sincere cooperation, collaboration and integrity. I will always be striving for these very same values throughout our Bayside, and in my work as State Member for Lytton. Please enjoy a short speech I made in Parliament recently regarding reconciliation, and my commitment to Baysiders.
