I am committed to keeping our Bayside community safe and welcoming for all.
I am pleased to announce that new, tougher action is being taken by the Queensland Government to further protect the safety of our Queensland communities. These new laws fall under three categories of reform: 1. Targeting serious repeat offenders 2. Tackling the complex causes of youth crime 3. Investing in community safety. Some of the reforms include: • Making breach of bail an offence, just like it is for adults; • Expanding presumption against bail: people who are passengers in stolen vehicles, commit burglary or enter a premise to commit an indictable offence will now have a presumption against bail; • New declaration of serious repeat offenders: The Youth Justice Act will be amended to declare certain offenders as ‘serious repeat offenders’, meaning tougher sentencing principles to protect community safety must be applied; • Fast-track sentencing of young offenders to ensure faster, quicker justice for victims; • Increasing Youth Detention capacity; • Extra high visibility police patrols and proactive policing; • More than $100 million extra invested in diversion and rehabilitation programs; and • More crime prevention funding including helping seniors with home security improvements, such as strengthening window locks and shutters. These reforms are based in evidence, and have resulted from listening to the community. As the Premier has said, community safety must always come first. I would like to hear what YOU have to say on these reforms to improve community safety. Please click the button below to fill out my short survey. Your honest feedback and advice is greatly appreciated and will be given due consideration.
