Baysiders to Benefit from New Bill Busting Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate

Joan Pease MP2023-08-02

The Queensland Government is introducing a new State-wide cost-of-living measure that aims to ease the burden of electricity bills while promoting energy efficiency.

Key Points:

  • Around 40,000 households to benefit from key cost-of-living measure

  • Rebates of up to $1000 on offer to buy and install energy-efficient appliances for eligible households

  • The $22 million program includes rebates for washing machines, fridges, dryers, dishwashers, air-conditioners and hot water systems

The $22 million Smart Energy Savers program will offer rebates of up to $1000 to around 40,000 eligible households in Queensland. This fantastic initiative includes rebates for a wide range of energy-efficient appliances, such as washing machines, fridges, dryers, dishwashers, air-conditioners, and hot water systems. The program is set to kick off next month, allowing eligible households to take advantage of substantial savings on energy-efficient appliances. In addition to this new rebate, Baysiders can already benefit from electricity bill rebates of $550 and $1072 for senior and concession card holders, respectively. The main goal of this program is to make it easier for households to transition to energy-efficient appliances, leading to significant savings on electricity bills and reducing CO2 emissions. Studies show that making the switch from 2 to 4 star appliances can save individual Queensland households hundreds to thousands of dollars annually. On top of that, it will contribute to the reduction of thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, making it a win-win situation for both residents and the environment. Low-income households will particularly benefit from this program, but it's important to note that all Queenslanders will have access to cost-of-living support on selected appliances. To be eligible for the low-income additional component, individual applicants must meet the Low Income Tax Offset threshold as defined by the ATO. I am so proud to see the Queensland Government committed to helping Queenslanders with additional cost-of-living relief. The government has already committed a record $8.2 billion to concessions this financial year, and this new program adds to their efforts to help ease cost-of-living pressures. Here is a breakdown of the rebates available for different appliances: - Washing Machines: $300 (Standard Income) / $550 (Low Income) - Dishwashers: $300 (Standard Income) / $550 (Low Income) - Dryers: $300 (Standard Income) / $550 (Low Income) - Refrigerators: $350 (Standard Income) / $600 (Low Income) - Air Conditioners: $400 (Standard Income) / $650 (Low Income) - Solar and Heat Pump Hot Water Systems: $800 (Standard Income) / $1000 (Low Income) The rebates are limited to one per household and will be available until the program's funding is exhausted. This is a golden opportunity to upgrade your household appliances and save on electricity bills for years to come. I hope that this initiative will empower Baysiders to make energy-conscious decisions and contribute to a more sustainable future for our beautiful State.
